Your Horse Has Dream Stalls Too

Just as important as the footing your horse rides on so is what your horse stands on in his stall. While stall mats are a great option to cushion your horse’s legs after a hard long workout or long term confinement, the next step up in quality care is a stall mattress.

San Diego veterinarian and equine podiatry expert Mark Silverman, DVM MS, acknowledges the benefit of standing on an appropriately cushioned surface. “Anytime we can control the substrate for those of us on our feet for a long time, it’s a good thing. If I’m in my shop, for example, standing on concrete versus a mat, there’s an energy vibration that goes through the entire skeleton. If you can dampen that, you dampen the concussive tendencies.”

Stall mattresses are a real benefit to a horse’s joints, especially those recovering from leg injuries. They also provide soft, but supportive footing for horses with hoof problems like laminitis. A resilient yet forgiving surface closely mimics natural pasture. Horses stabled on a mattress system are more likely to lie-down for better rest. It also helps eliminate slipping when getting up and down. Hock sores in recumbent horses are greatly also reduced.

Another benefit of using a stall mattress is an improved quality of air to keep your horse’s respiratory system healthy. A mattress system allows you to use just enough bedding to absorb urine without having to use too much for cushioning. Less bedding use means easier clean-up, less manure to get rid of and less bedding to buy.

This ensures that no bedding or waste gets underneath the stall mat system.
