Horses That Heal is a non-profit organization associated with psychological counseling services using Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) based in Fayetteville/Fort Bragg, North Carolina, serving at-risk youth as well as active-duty military, retired and/or reserves.

EAP is a different approach from traditional therapy. The special relationship between human and horse helps people place human traits onto horses. This is similar to how we see our pets as people. Often, the horse mirrors the emotional state of the person. Working with horses develops non-verbal skills, confidence, responsibility, problem solving, assertiveness, and teamwork. Those that may benefit from EAP include those suffering from:

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Anxiety

Depression

Conduct Disorders

Personality Disorders

Eating Disorders

Horses That Heal uses the Eagala Model (EAP) paired with Eagala certified professionals. The Eagala Model is a team approach that includes a licensed, credentialed Mental Health Professional, a qualified Equine Specialist, and horses working together with the client in an arena at all times. When inside the arena, all the work is done on the ground with the horses front and center, deliberately unhindered and never ridden, and allowed to interact with the client as they wish. This creates the space for the client, with the support of the professional facilitators, to reflect, project, and make deep connections. The Eagala Model includes:

A Team Approach - Licensed clinical therapist and equine specialist; Focus on Groundwork - No mounting required; Solution Oriented - The client will determine the best solution; Code of Ethics

Their Mission Statement states:

"Horses that Heal is an experiential program that provides the opportunity for people to achieve lasting change and healing through hands on activities with horses. We use horses as a means to learn and grow emotionally.”
